Patients receiving health care are at risk of developing infection as a result of their compromised cleaning, disinfection & sterilization protocols or during instrument reprocessing. This course is designed for employees working in a Sterile Processing area, in the Operating Room, or other areas of a Hospital performing cleaning, decontamination, and packaging and sterilization services.
The course includes the latest developments surrounding the process of instrument reprocessing and infection control.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Clean, disinfect and distribute sterilized instrumentation and equipment to an emergency department, intensive care unit, the labor and delivery unit, operating room and other areas of health care facilities in a scientific manner.

The central sterile processing technician plays a vital role in maintaining the cleanliness, functionality and inventory of health care instrumentation and equipment. Their work ensures that patients don’t acquire infections and that doctor, nurses and allied health professionals are able to access the instrumentation and equipment they need immediately.
COURSE WILL COVER

Preparation of surgical goods and instrumentation for sterilization

Maintains appropriate rotation of sterile supplies

Appropriately identify each sterilizer load and maintain record of each

Maintain a high standard of cleanliness in the department

Practice safe handling of patient care items that have been exposed to blood and/or body fluid

Knowledge of sterilization and infection control standards Provides effective disinfection and sterilization services

Disassembling, decontaminating, inspecting and reassembling surgical/ medical instruments in accordance with established procedures. Packing and wrapping, sealing and labeling instruments and sets.

Maintains a safe clean environment using only authorized cleaning products and adheres to the principles of infection control.

Biological indicator testing

Operating all sterilizer (steam and gas) as per policies.

Unload all sterile items as per policies into the holding area (sterile room). Preparing all sterilized items for delivery and storage in CSSD. Checking all instruments and packs for correct labeling, i.e. (Checklist) log number, identification of pack, faults (tears or wetness), color change of the chemical indicators on and inside each pack.
